Seagull Challenger Kit
ARTF kits are great, we all love Ďem and we all appreciate the time savings they provide, however a growing number of R/C flyers are finding that, having assembled one or two ARTFs, what they really fancy is a stab at traditional building. Some choose a plan build for their first foray into balsa-bashing but most seek a simple kit, a kit such as the Seagull Challenger, that offers all the advantages of laser cut parts, carefully chosen hardware and an instruction manual that guides you step-by-step through the build process.
In truth, the Challenger is the perfect choice for not only does it ensure a problem-free build, it offers an opportunity to produce a one-off model in a colour scheme of your choice and promises a fantastic, agile aerobatic flight performance when youíre finished. Building your own R/C model is absorbing, enjoyable and immensely satisfying and thatís why so many are deciding to give it a go. Itís also why the Challenger kit is such a popular choice amongst sport flyers and those seeking a good follow-on aerobat.

The CAP 232 was designed with the intermediate/advanced sport scale in mind. It is a semi scale airplane which is easy to fly and quick to assemble. The airframe is conventionally built using balsa, plywood to make it stronger than the average ARTF , yet the design allows the aeroplane to be kept light.

Westland Lysander III (SEA-216)
Click here to see a slideshow.
Even at the time of its maiden flight in 1936 Westlandís answer to the the 1934 Air Ministry specification that called for an army co-operation and liaison aircraft was, to be honest, looking rather dated. Even so, with its fully automatic wing slots, slotted flaps and variable incidence tailplane the Lysander was aerodynamically advanced, offering its pilots a stall speed of just 65mph and an enviable STOL capability. So it was, then, that the Lysander beat Bristolís Type 148, won the contract, and entered the popular annals of history.
Rugged, gull-winged, bespatted, and powered by Bristol Mercury radial, this ugly duckling of a warbird was destined only to endear itself to all who clapped eyes on it, and so it is with Seagullís carefully considered 50cc facsimile. Itís a beauty!
Presented in the eye-catching colour scheme of LX-L, a Lysander III housed at Hendonís Royal Air Force Museum, this 118Ē span high quality balsa / ply ARTF comes factory covered in genuine matt finish Oracover film and features a detailed cockpit, two piece plug-in wings (to simplify transport and assembly) and, crucially, all the necessary hardware for either glow or electric power.
Take it from us, this model flies in a wonderful scale fashion and will happily cruise around performing gentle circuits and bumps all day long. Add flap, dial in a little elevator compensation, and the STOL characteristics of the full-size really come to the fore. All-in-all a gentlemanly aeroplane in every sense but with the benefit of coordinated aileron / rudder turns to keep it real and maintain the challenge.
